An essay that feels like a Russian Doll
I wrote some words and then responded to those words.
Hopefully by the end it makes a complete thought. For now, I have condensed the subject of my focus to a ‘landscape in turmoil’. In Maizels class the other day, we were going over ‘Deconstruction’ with Derrida and everything. I heard the word entropy which I hadn’t really acknowledged in a while. I think this might be the heart of what I am looking for. Entropy pushed to a particular moment of tension. The moment I am looking for can be climactic but I think it is often banal which is okay with me as long as it is readable as a landscape.
The moment of tension has to be visually readable for me. Part of it is the challenge itself of pushing towards pure abstraction while pulling back into the familiar. Part of it is the aesthetic of an image struggling to convey information.
Dichotomies might be unrealistic and narrow-minded but it is one way I know to focus amongst a network of ideas. The problem of binaries that I have right now is picking the ones that best suit the work.
I was reading excerpts from Rosa Menkmans ‘The Glitch Moment(um)’ and the term ‘compression artist’ was claimed by some people. Compression as way of generating entropy. This is more of a literal compression of information, but it reminds me of a different compression of ideas/concepts.
I saw a touring exhibition some years ago with the Impressionists of the School of Pont Aven, the peers of Gauguin. At this school is was taught or understood that a painting is only a translation of an experience. Having lost something due to this compression from life to canvas, they sought to embellish the image with vibrant colors. While I do try to draw some visual cues from these artist, I think I am more attached to this idea of loss and repair. In other words of entropy and improvement.
