What To Do With A Fancy Pencil
As I have critiques and studio visits most people I talk to can get on board with the idea of making a really nice pencil and the idea of it eventually being consumed, however the parameters surrounding the process of consumption seem to be where there is the most uncertainty/input so here is a list of options I can think of, and I welcome more suggestions.
- break the lead off in the wall mimicking another piece I'm working on
- give it to my eldest son to use at school and sharpen down (likelihood of it being lost in the first week is very high)
- make a drawing with it, though it is not a drawing pencil.
- shade a pedestal with it.
- play that game where you put your hand on a table and stab between each finger.
- rent it out for use.
- give it to Dylan to pin his hair with (though it doesn't necessarily get consumed that way)
- cover it with chicken grease and leave it out for a raccoon to chew on.
- use it to learn to write with my toes.
- just use it like a normal pencil.
- eat it, literally consuming it (this could be dangerous/poisonous)
- carve a whimsy out of it.
- use it as the needle of a record player
- put it in dirt and allow it to decay back into the earth
- create a travel kit for it that can be passed around with an integrated sharpener and journal and ask people to write a short essay about the pencil/pencils in general with it.
cover it with chicken grease and leave it out for a raccoon to chew on or shade a pedestal with it. I like the first one but you'll get more money for your dollar with the second one.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to pin my hair with it if it helps complete your work. That's easy labor on my part! :)
ReplyDeleteAnother idea:
Write your name with it, erase it, sharpen the tip, write your name again. Repeat until pencil is consumed.
That way the pencil is allowed to do what a pencil does (both writing and erasing), but the product of that action is deemphasized.
Something to this effect... http://bit.ly/2fLQQcq
